Location Information

Poole has been a centre of shipping for centuries. It is Europe's largest natural harbour and the views across it have not really changed over all the years. In the centre still stands proudly Brownsea Island (the home of the first Boy Scout Camp in 1907, now owned by the National Trust).

Boats have been built in Poole for centuries. An ancient log boat (dating back to 295 B.C.) was dredged out of the harbour in the 1960s. Boats are still built here today, but now Poole is more famous as the home of the 'Sunseeker' Power Boat Company, which began life in 1960 and now has wide international acclaim. Poole is also the home of several marinas for a large number of yachts and motorboats travelling along the south coast.

The harbour has been a cargo port for many years and ships arrive daily from across the world. There is also a local fishing fleet of approximately 80-90 professional fishermen, setting out daily for their mussels, oysters, crabs and flat fish. The town also boasts its busy ferry port providing holiday trips to France, Spain and the Channel Islands.

The town of Poole itself has great evidence of its medieval past. The 'old town' still possesses examples of its old heritage, but the overall style of architecture is Georgian, which stems from the large redevelopment of the town in the 18th century, when Poole became particularly prosperous. Today the busy shopping centres and large number of designer shops provide for any needs for the family.

Naturally, Poole offers all kinds of water sports, sailing (including the sailing school at Rockley Point), water ski-ing, windsurfing and many others. Swimming is a plentiful pastime on many of the local beaches. There are many live music venues around the town, concert halls, theatres and cinemas. There are a huge number of family attractions including Compton Acres, the Tower Park Entertainment Centre, Speedway Racing at Poole Stadium and the wide range of restaurants, not forgetting, of course, the wonderful New Forest nearby with 96,000 acres of open countryside for all to enjoy. Living close to all these facilities is a huge draw for any family and is difficult to better anywhere in the country.
